PITCH PERFECT 2 Opens to $70.3M; MAD MAX: FURY ROAD No. 2 With $44.4M

It was a very good weekend at the box office. Pitch Perfect 2 opened with $70.3 million, Mad Max: Fury Road debuted to $44.4 million and Avengers: Age of Ultron added another $38.8 million to its massive haul.

Let's start with Pitch Perfect 2. In one weekend, the sequel grossed more than its predecessor made over its entire domestic run. The original Pitch Perfect grossed $65 million in 2012. Elizabeth Banks hit a home run in her rookie directorial effort. Thanks to Pitch Perfect 2's debut weekend, not only will Universal be eager for a third Pitch Perfect movie, Banks will probably find herself in demand as a director now.

A few outlets are looking at Mad Max: Fury Road's $44.4 million opening as a failure — since when is cracking $40 million a failure? Director George Miller's fourth Mad Max film has received near universal praise, and the movie has outgrossed each of its predecessors. OK, fine, I guess we have to take inflation into consideration. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, the most recent installment before Fury Road, opened in 1985. Things were different then — tickets were cheaper, there wasn't a 3D ticket markup, there were no IMAX screens. A $44.4 million opening weekend is still a success. Mad Max: Fury Road is going to continue to add to its total, both at home and globally.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is now up to $372 million domestically and $1.1 billion globally. Age of Ultron is the 25th highest grossing movie in North America but has already shot up to No. 8 in world history. Of the top ten highest grossing movies worldwide, Marvel Studios owns three of those spots.
