FAST AND FURIOUS 8 Doesn't Have a Release Date, Cast, Director or Script Yet

After Furious 7 opened to a record-setting $147.2 million last weekend, an eighth Fast and Furious movie seemed like a certainty. It turns out Universal hasn't made much movement on pulling the sequel together, The Hollywood Reporter wrote on Wednesday.

Fast and Furious 8 (or whatever crazy title Universal winds up giving the movie) doesn't have a release date, its biggest stars under contract, someone to direct or a script yet. THR notes that this the Fast and Furious franchise has always worked movie-to-movie, with a release date setting the pace for each installment's process.

"Honestly, we're just bathing in the success of this," producer Neal Moritz told THR. "We'll probably get together in a week or so to talk."

According to THR, the contracts for the big Fast and Furious stars like Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson are up. "Insiders say some ensemble veterans have run through their options, so new installments would have to be renegotiated," THR writes. "Ditto for Dwayne Johnson, who joined with Fast Five and whose deals are on a film-by-film basis."

There's also the issue of Fast and Furious 8 needing a director. Furious 7 director James Wan is busy working on The Conjuring 2, and Justin Lin, who directed The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast Five and Fast and Furious 6, recently signed on to lead the upcoming Star Trek sequel. If Universal wants to get moving quickly on another Fast and Furious installment, it looks like they'll have to start looking for a new director.

One way or another, Universal is going to make not just an eighth Fast and Furious movie — they're going to make at least ten. This franchise isn't going to end until moviegoers stop watching and its stars stop caring about making movies.
