The next time Hugh Jackman dons the iconic claws to play Wolverine will be his last time. The actor made the announcement through his Instagram account on Saturday.

Jackman didn't mention what X-Men movie will be his final time playing Wolverine, but it's likely the in-development sequel to 2013's The Wolverine. Jackman is scheduled to reunite with director James Mangold for the third Wolverine standalone movie that's set to hit theaters on March 3, 2017.

There are also two X-Men movies scheduled for 2016, with X-Men: Apocalypse opening on May 27 and Gambit opening on Oct. 7. There's always the chance Jackman's final appearance as Wolverine could be in one of those two films, but it seems unlikely that Fox wouldn't want to take advantage of a giant "HUGH JACKMAN'S FINAL TIME" marketing campaign for a third Wolverine solo film.

The actor was a virtual unknown before getting cast as Wolverine in 2000's X-Men. Jackman's career has taken off since that movie a decade and a half ago, and he's appeared as the character in all seven X-Men franchise films.

Fox hasn't had an issue recasting X-Men characters over the course of the franchise, but Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine has been the common thread that wove them all together. It helps when you're playing a character that doesn't really age. After Jackman retires from the character, what will Fox do? Will they immediately cast a new actor to follow in Jackman's footsteps or will they let Wolverine stay dormant for a few years? Following Jackman isn't an envious job but as he showed himself, the role of Wolverine could catapult an actor to fame.
