AVATAR 2 Delayed Until 2017: Does Anyone Even Care?

If Disney were to all of a sudden push back Avengers: Age of Ultron or Star Wars: The Force Awakens a year, there would be riots on the streets of the Internet. Twitter would go crazy. When James Cameron delays Avatar 2 another year, though, does anyone really care?

The director revealed to The Associated Press in an interview published Wednesday that the Avatar sequel would now be released in 2017 instead of 2016, citing a "very involved" writing process.

"There's a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don't get when you're making a stand-alone film," Cameron said. "We're writing three simultaneously. And we've done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We're not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that. ... And parallel with that, we're doing all the design. So we've designed all the creatures and the environments."

I've read two articles over the past month or so discussing that fact that five years after Avatar debuted, the film has no active fan base, which is insane when you compare it to franchises like Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only do Avatar fans not expect a movie on a regular basis, they apparently don't even care enough to keep talking about the first one.

Avatar grossed $760.5 million domestically and almost $2.8 billion worldwide. Where are all the people who flocked to Avatar when it was in theaters?

Here's the answer: People have finally realized that Avatar, while a very visually stunning movie, wasn't a good movie. It was predictable. It was simple. It kind of, sort of ripped off FernGully, Pocahontas and Dances With Wolves. The fact that Avatar was not only nominated but at one point considered the favorite for a Best Picture Oscar was infuriating.

Avatar was a pretty movie. Nothing more. A lot of people didn't get that back in 2009 and 2010. Now they do.
