Marvel's Big Event: Could Miles Morales Be the Spider-Man That Joins the Cinematic Universe?

So Marvel Studios is holding a big event at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The studio isn't saying what's going to be announced during the event, but a couple theories have going around the Internet on Monday.

The announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Doctor Strange would've been a big deal, but that news already spilled on Monday. I can't see the studio holding a huge event just to repeat what the Internet already leaked. Maybe the Cumberbatch/Doctor Strange news could be a part of the event, but that can't be Marvel's big news.

There are also rumors that the studio could reveal its upcoming slate of films. There are a lot of dates announced for Marvel Cinematic Universe moves, but there aren't many titles attached to those dates. After Warner Bros. spilled its upcoming ten-movie slate in a conference call to investors, maybe Marvel is ready to show its cards too — just in a more exciting way.

Once again, this would be a cool announcement, but is it really worthy of an entire event?

Here's my thinking: Those rumors that Marvel Studios and Sony were working on a way to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe are finally going to come to fruition. There's going to be a twist though.

Miles Morales is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sony isn't going to abandon its plans for an Amazing Spider-Man megafranchise, not after it's already invested so much in the Andrew Garfield-led series. Allowing Marvel Studios to use the Ultimate Spider-Man would keep Sony's plans intact while the studio would still be able to benefit from their crown jewel superhero being featured in a Marvel Studios movie, probably Captain America 3's Civil War storyline.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, the two men behind Sony's Spider-Man property, made it clear earlier this year that they had zero interest in using Miles Morales in the movies. If Sony doesn't want the extremely popular character, why not let Marvel Studios put him to use?

We'll know more tomorrow when Marvel holds its big event at 2 pm ET. Marvel doesn't actually need to make any of these announcements to combat what Warner Bros. is doing. The megasuccess of Guardians of the Galaxy and amazing Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer have made it clear that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is an unparalleled force of pop culture right now. The Justice League is just playing catchup.

(If this theory does come true, the first person Marvel Studios should talk to to play Miles is Donald Glover. He already voices the character in the animated Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors series.)
