The Oscars Next? Neil Patrick Harris Will Host the Emmys for His Second Time

The Emmys are a weird creature. The show understands funny hosts, letting funny people like Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel host, but the actual Emmy voters either don't understand funny TV or don't even watch TV. Last year, Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons won Emmys*, while shows like Community (back when it was genius), Happy Endings and Parks and Recreation are consistently ignored.

While the awards will still probably go to lowest-common-denominator sitcoms, the Emmys made another great host pick for the 2013 ceremony, choosing How I Met Your Mother star and previous Emmy host Neil Patrick Harris. The actor last hosted the show in 2009. From The Hollywood Reporter:
“Neil is the quintessential host -- engaging, entertaining and a true showman -- with a passion for celebrating the medium we all love. We’re thrilled for him to return for CBS’ broadcast of the Emmy Awards,” CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler said in a statement announcing the news.
The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards will air on CBS on Sept. 22, 2013.

*Modern Family was brilliant its first season. After that, it's recycled the same set of plots over and over again. Cameron and Mitchell are stereotypes who clearly hate each other. Manny is the worst. As for The Big Bang Theory, it heavily relies on a laughtrack and has tricked everyone into thinking it's a smart comedy just because it's about smart people.
